Congratulations Yrautca!
It's actually perfect timing since the weightloss season is upon us. And we're all making our resolutions for weightloss, crowding to the gym diply cheek to saggy jowl with all the other fatties who have been neglecting their physiques over the holidays.
I want to see some serious commitment this year ladies. Any ideas to help add some motivation to the competition? New format? Let me know. I have a couple of ideas. I'm thinking that we should have a little more record keeping this year, a running tally of who has won the most weeks... stuff like that.
I also want to see everyone make a big push in January.
As for this week, no big surprise, but I gained 3 lbs. I ate a lot over the holidays. Next year, I've got to tell everyone to not give me chocolate and shit for Christmas, because I obviously can't resist. I'm having trouble getting too down on myself over it, since I've gotten so much attention over the holidays from all the pals who hadn't seen me in a while. Things like, 'Every time I see you you look more beautiful.' Seriously, who could be bummed about their weight when they're getting those kinds of comments. That's a much nicer reward for a year of hard work than a box of chocolates.

Last weigh-in before Christmas
As I'm sure all the retailers have told you, Christmas time is here again, and after the Christmas season comes the Weight-loss season and, of course, our first aniversary of competition. To liven things up for our first anniversary, I think we should change things up. Any suggestions are of course welcome. I've been working on a couple of new competitors to keep you lazy bitches on your toes. And also I'm going to ask for updated height and weight info from all of you so that we can have some summaries of our achievements for the year.
I'm sure some of you are having problems posting because of the switch to Blogger Beta, but you're always welcome to email your post or comment to me and I'll put it up for you, or you can post anonymously and sign your name at the end.
Don't forget to email me your heights and weights.

Holiday Tips
Eat-smart strategies for party season

The conventional wisdom about the holidays is that weight gain is unavoidable. But don't let it scare you away from enjoying your favorite foods at this time of year. Here are thee eat-smart strategies to get you through the season.
Enjoy holiday foods with moderation
Many common holiday foods -- sweet potatoes, dried fruit, and turkey, to name a few -- are nutritious options when enjoyed in moderation. Sneak in a little extra physical activity every day to burn off additional calories and benefit from the stress-reducing effects of exercise.
Also remember, if you want to avoid overindulging with a food you really love, this is not the only time of year you can eat it. "Ask for a recipe from the cook so you can make it at home, and simply opt to prepare it after the holidays," says Milton Stokes, R.D., a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.
The average weight gain during the six-week span from Thanksgiving to New Year's is just under one pound, according to a yearlong study of nearly 200 people published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Even though enjoying delicious holiday dishes might not increase your waistline by as much as you'd expect, calorie consciousness is still important.
"The weight increase isn't dramatic, but the research did reveal something significant -- study participants did not reverse their gains during the following months," says Susan Z. Yanovski, M.D., study coauthor and director of the Obesity and Eating Disorders Program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. This has led obesity experts to speculate that the small weight gain from the holidays may accumulate from year to year, contributing to the more substantial gains many people experience as they age.
Keep your appetite in check.
One way to avoid a post-meal energy drain is to approach a big dinner with an appetite that's in check. Avoid eating smaller-than-normal portions for breakfast and lunch, which may leave you feeling ravenous at dinner and prompt you to eat more than normal, Stokes says.
The reason a nap is so appealing after any big meal is the large amount of energy required to digest it, Stokes says. During the process, blood is diverted away from the nervous system and to the digestive system -- where it's needed to help break down food and absorb nutrients. "It's no wonder people are left feeling less energetic, fatigued, and even foggy-headed," Stokes says. Your body signals you to rest because it has a lot of work to do.
Maintain your equilibrium during social situations.
Research indicates that it's not the parties that prompt us to eat, but being around friends and family that may lead to diet missteps. In a study conducted at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, researchers found that dining in a group causes the average person to eat 44 percent more calories than he or she normally would eating alone. "When you're socializing, it's natural to lose track of what and how much you're eating," says Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., professor of nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University. "Since the number of distractions will most likely be greater, a holiday party can increase the tendency to overeat even more than just going out to dinner with friends."
Being mindful will help you keep a mental checklist of how much you're consuming. Since you don't want to offend by skipping your host's offerings, try taking a smaller serving. Make a conscious effort to balance your plate with plenty of fruits and veggies, and a healthy portion -- about three to four ounces -- of protein, Rolls says. Also, take a second to look at every bite before you eat it. This psychological connection will help you keep your portions under control.

A run in the rain
I am up one pound though. Its getting harder to lose. I am very close to my target and I have planned to be there by Jan 1.
Check out the legs on this guy (and butt). This guy set his camera on auto, and just when he was about to turn to face the camera, the shutter went off. But still, you get the picture.
P.S. somewhere PP just recoiled in utter disgust, so be it.
Up an lb.

Recipe time!
Italian Chicken Rollups
4 servings
Ingredients:
4 (4-ounce) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
1 tsp. dried basil
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
4 (1-ounce) part-skim mozzarella string cheese sticks
Cooking spray
1 cup garlic-and-herb tomato sauce
1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
2. Place each chicken breast half between 2 sheets of wax paper and pound the Hell out of it with a mallet or rolling pin until it's about 1/4-inch thickness (see, this recipe is theraputic too -- who doesn't enjoy taking out their aggression on meat?)
3. Combine basil, salt and pepper; sprinkle half of mixture evenly over both sides of chicken.
4. Place 1 string cheese stick across the center of each flattened chicken breast. Roll up chicken around cheese stick. Place chicken rolls, seams side down, in a baking dish. Sprinkle with the rest of the spice mixture and coat with cooking spray.
5. Pour tomato sauce over chicken. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
I forgot to pour the tomato sauce over it before cooking and it still turned out fine.
Anyway, let me know if you have any recipe requests and I'll go through my cookbooks and see if I can find anything for you. Enjoy!

I thought we posted on Thursdays??
Apparently my lack of sweets, walking around for days and sweating out buckets of water in Africa has gained me a pound. Can you freaking believe it????? I can't...well i suppose i can as i ate A LOT of carbs and very little veggies. It was rather hard to come by veggies that were cooked and i was not risking the shits for raw veggies so i ate a lot of french fries and rice, as well as yummy African food. And the beer...oh the beer. We drank 625ml bottles of beer every evening, countless bottles each, so yeah a pound i should not complain about. I remember coming home from Japan 10 pounds lighter....les boo to the yummy food and cheap beer in Africa!!

Horrified
Especially a certain photographer at your brother's wedding who takes the most unfortunate picture of you and POSTS IT ON HIS WEB SITE FOR ALL FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO SEE!
It's like this...during Morgan's reception, my other brother Mitchell was playing around and caught me in a head lock, bending me backwards and holding me hostage. Because of the assault, my body was in an awkward position to start with...on top of the fact that being caught off guard I forgot all about 'sucking it in' which all girls know is a vitally important tactic whenever a camera is in the vicinity.
I was unaware that the photographer had cunningly snapped a shot of this exchange until I viewed the wedding pictures on his website last night and nearly slid out of my chair in horror. There I am...body twisted and distorted, shirt riding up and stomach showing.
Oh sweet jesus I want to die.
On the upside...if there was ever any motivation needed to lose weight...this was it.

Dilemmas
Or when you're suddenly having to wiggle into pants that you used to just pull straight up.
Or when you've finally gotten said pants on, you realize that suddenly, bits of your hips are peeking over the waist of your jeans. Oh the horror!!!
I've been doing good. One of the girls at the office really wants to lose weight so she and I have started buddying up this week. We bring our lunch to avoid splurging on fast food and we go walking for 2 miles everyday at lunch. It's nice to have someone to go with because it keeps me focused and prevents me from making excuses to skip out.
I'm down 2 lbs this week. Slow and steady wins the race right?

Coffee drinks loaded with fat and calories: report
A regular latte or cappuccino from a Canadian coffee shop packs a punch in fat and calories, a new report shows.
The Centre for Science in the Public Interest took a close look at the offerings from Canada's big three coffee chains, Tim Hortons, Starbucks and the Second Cup.
Starbucks' blueberry green tea Frappuccino was the worst, weighing in at 560 calories and nine grams of fat per 16-ounce serving.
A Tim Hortons double-double — with two creams and two sugars — has 160 calories per 10-ounce cup. A black coffee had about 10 calories and no fat.
"We're concerned about the public health implications of people consuming food products or beverages that can adversely affect their health," said Bill Jeffery of the Centre for Science in the Public Interest in Ottawa.
One drink could pack the 500 to 600 calories of a healthy dinner of chicken breast, rice and vegetables, said Dana Wilkinson, nutrition research co-ordinator at the University of Alberta.
Starbucks declined to comment on the report's findings. In a statement, the company said they offer "a wide variety of options."
Starbucks started the sweet trend to lure people who don't necessarily like plain coffee, said coffee lover and freelance writer Gilbert Bouchard of Edmonton.
The strategy introduces people to coffee culture through a form they're already familiar with, such as milkshakes and soft drinks, Bouchard said.
The strategy worked, and the high-calorie drinks are among the most popular at coffee kiosks across Canada.
But a single beverage can represent a quarter of your recommended daily caloric intake, with little nutritional value.
A daily double-double or low-fat latte adds up to an extra 17 pounds of fat in one year.
The report's authors recommend avoiding whipped cream and extra sugar and suggest asking for skim milk.
The report, called "Good Cup, Bad Cup," also includes the saturated and trans fat content of the beverages.

yrautca rubs it in
I am not feeling sore but I am exhausted. In order to run I need carbs. Whereas on a day-to-day basis I avoid carbs, on a running day I get a sandwich at lunch. I have tried running on a low carb diet but it just doesn’t work.
Anyway, I am happy that I finished my run. My next run is on Thursday but I am not planning to run more than 3 miles.
BTW, do you know how many calories you burn when you run for 60 minutes at a 10-minute mile pace? Close to 800. I started at 10-minute mile pace for the first 10 minutes, then increased the pace to 9.13-minute mile.
Damn at this pace, I will be so hot, the fire alarm will go off just as I enter the gym ;)

Where have all the cowgirls gone?
I have stuck to my routine. I have been increasing the weight that I lift and I can feel the burn in my chest, biceps, tricpes, shoulders muscles. Its a good kind of burn.
Today, I ran 4 miles and even then I could have carried on if I wanted to. I am seriously thinking that I should run a marathon. I think I have the legs and the lungs to run long distance. I just need to train right and learn the mental aspect of it. When I run I can feel it in my knees the next morning. Thats the only downside to it.

Weight Watchers
I have never really been one to stick to structured diets. But, my work offered us 13 free weeks of Weight Watchers AND we get to skip out of work for an hour to do it... So I went. (On a side note, I don't get my workplace at all. They encourage us to live a healthy lifestyle and offer free Weight Watchers and stop-smoking clinics and free gyms, etc. But, they also give us 2 free cases of beer each month. No joke -- 48 bottles/cans a month. They tempt us into getting beer bellies and then offer us free Weight Watchers and tell us to work it off. Crazy.)
Anyway, the system is pretty simple. Everything is based on points. So, if you weigh...
Less than 150 = 20 points per day
150-174 = 22 points per day
175-199 = 24 points per day
200-224 = 26 points per day
And so on. The point is to eat exactly your allotted points per day (or as close to that amount as humanly possible but no less than 20 points no matter what). You can determine how many points everything is by going to sites such as dietfacts.com and looking it up (you can search by food brand or by restaurant). It's really shocking. I always ate pretty healthy but now I can see just how bad some things really are.
So, you keep a record of everything you eat each day and tally the points. You can eat whatever you want, but you need to stick to your allotted points. Of course, you're supposed to drink lots of water, eat fruits and veggies, etc. But, the points are the most important thing.
You also get additional food points for exercise. So, if you do light to moderate exercise for 30 minutes you get an extra food point for that. The number of points you get for exercise increases depending on the level of activity and duration of exercise. But, you never get more than 3 food points from exercise. And, anything under 30 minutes doesn't count.
Lastly, you also have 35 extra points that you can use whenever you want throughout the week. So, if you go to a BBQ and overeat by 8 points or something like that you can check that off your 35 extra points for the week. However, you REALLY shouldn't use all 35 extra points or else you won't lose that much weight. I try not to use any except on the weekends. And, it's worked for me -- I've lost 8% of my body weight since starting 6-7 weeks ago.
Oh, and another big thing is portion size. You really have to pay attention to that. You might say "Oh, this is only 4 points." But, then you look and see that if you eat the whole thing it's really 2 servings so that's really 8 points. We eat too much and don't even know it!
So, an average day for me might look like this:
Coffee (w/cream & sugar) = 2 points
Oatmeal = 2 points
Frozen Meal = 7 points
Carrots = 0 points
Light Yogurt = 1 point
Skinless Chicken = 5 points
Lima Beans = 1 point
Granola Bar = 2 points
TOTAL = 20 points
I'm not going to lie and say it isn't hard -- it is. But, it's totally doable. I can still eat pizza or whatever -- I just need to eat less and plan my day so that I have enough points for it.
Give it a try and see what you think.

I really AM a loser!!
At first the weigh-in lady told me that I lost 8.4 pounds and I basically told her that she was on crack. It turns out she was doing her math wrong. Still, 3.4 is AWESEOME, especially considering that I ate like a piggy poo in Boston (though I did walk a trillion miles -- though I doubt that totally made up for it).
Anyway, I am compiling all my Weight Watchers tips for you guys now and I will share those in my next post. I think it really works, but you have to keep yourself in line.

people think i am hot stuff
First, as you know I am back in the lovely ‘burbs. So I went to my hair stylist from 6 months ago – a Ukranian immigrant. Poor woman cant speak much English but knows how to cut hair. Guess what she says to me,
She: you look smaller than before
Smaller to her means thinner; don’t get ahead of yourself.
Me: you mean I was fat before?
She: no no no, you just look more small than before. You lost weight.
Me: I love you.
And then today, gosh, I cant even believe it. I am going to the kitchen at work and one coworker sees me and says, hey you look like you have lost some weight, you look great. I was like whaoaaaaa….but then as I am coming back from the kitchen to my desk, ANOTHER coworker sees me, comes to me, takes hold of my bicep (not in a gay manner) and says, you look great, you been working out?
I guess the routine is working out after all.
Today we celebrate by drinking then……….
I will post my results for the week later this evening.

Fat people = big problems for hospitals
Hospitals across North America could be failing to diagnose small tumours in obese patients who either can’t fit into an X-ray scanner or have fatty tissue so dense the machine can’t penetrate it, a new study suggests.
The study, published in the August issue of the journal Radiology, found a growing number of patients are too large to fit into the scanner. In other cases, the X-rays have been fuzzy or imprecise because dense fat blocked the machine’s beams.
“There are things that you can miss because the X-ray beams are just not able to penetrate deep enough,” said study author Raul Uppot, a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
In some cases, the quality can be so poor that doctors could miss small lung, abdominal and liver tumours, Uppot said.
“We really have to address this issue,” he said.
“Canadians, Americans . . . should all realize that this is another problem they will have if they are obese. When they walk into the hospital, they may not be getting the most adequate care.”
Canadian hospitals are also grappling with the difficulties of diagnosing an increasing number of obese patients.
Stewart McNeil, patient equipment co-ordinator at Hamilton Health Sciences, said older equipment wasn’t designed to accommodate larger patients. He said older MRI scanners are often 46 inches wide.
“People are getting bigger and bigger,” said McNeil. “All hospitals are struggling with it.”
McNeil pointed out that the hospital can rent over-sized equipment when it’s called for, but noted that patients who are very obese are sometimes sent to nearby veterinary colleges.
“The MRI and X-ray machines there are designed for horses,” he said. “How would you feel?”
Ian Doris, board member of the Ontario Association of Radiologists, said sometimes just lifting an unconscious obese patient on to a scanner can take up to eight people.
Many older scanners also can’t support more than 400 pounds of weight, while in other cases, a patient’s sheer girth can touch the sides of the scanner, making it difficult to get a clear image.
It’s a particular problem with ultrasounds and detecting liver disease, said Doris, who noted the importance of ensuring that such patients are treated with the dignity they deserve.
“These people aren’t this way because they sit around eating Tim Hortons all day,” said Doris, a radiologist with Hamilton General Hospital. “It is recognized as an illness.”
While patients are expected to take responsibility for their own health, doctors say hospitals should also be updating their equipment to reflect the increasing weight of their patients.
They say hospitals have difficulty accommodating obese people outside the X-ray room as well — from finding stretchers and beds that are wide enough to providing plus-sized commodes.
Hospitals are supposed to replace their equipment every 10 years — a guideline that’s often ignored when the equipment is still functioning properly, said Robin Hesler, CEO of the Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.
In the meantime, Hesler said obese patients may be exposed to higher levels of radiation in some scans because more is needed to produce an image.
“This is a potential issue down the road,” Hesler said, adding obesity is on the rise. “This is a growing issue.”
Statistics Canada shows the nation’s obesity rate has almost doubled in the last 20 years — jumping from 13 per cent in 1978 to 23 per cent in 2004. The agency said obese adults are more likely to suffer health problems such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, some cancers and gall bladder disease.

Soooo Bloated bleh

So yes i gained a pound. I doubt it has anything to do with that lovely sundae i ate on the weekend, or the all you can eat chinese buffet i went to last night (It was for a birthday). It's that time of the month for me as well, and i feel like i'm 3 months pregnant i'm so bloated. I'm not sure if any of the other ladies get this but it's awful.
On a lighter note, i have been going to the gym and even though my arms feel like they are going to fall off from the weights i lifted the other day, i'm going back tonight after work. I'm getting back into a routine there and it feels really good. I also made this awesome veggie stirfry and ate a lot of salad this week. So it is slowly coming along for me. Jennifer suggested i stay away from the buffet until i hit my target weight. I agree.

If Linny is the Goddess of Sex, then I am the Queen of the Gym
Today my knee hurts, not only that, but, my issue is in the front of my knee, the swelling got so bad that it swelled the back of my knee, which is definitely a step in the wrong direction. But, I'll take the day off, see how I feel tomorrow and try to go a bit easier on it.

You already knew
Getting in great shape and alcohol don’t mix well. There are no two ways about it. If you want to get in gorgeous shape you have to give up alcohol or limit to 2 drinks a week, at least to start with. My toughest obstacle so far has been giving up beer.
You don’t have to workout like crazy. You just have to workout smart. If you take out only 20 to 30 minutes a day to workout smartly, you will see results. Do not overdo cardio. Monitor your heartbeat and workout at 70% of your max heart rate. Otherwise you start burning muscle.
There are no quick solutions. You have to embrace your fat and out of shape self. Know and accept that you are out of shape. Stick to your workout. Ignore the rest of the world because you already know what they think of you and you agree with them. Give yourself 4 weeks. You will see results. Forget the scale.
There are 2 ways to lose fat: one is to eat less calories than you burn. The other way is to eliminate carbs and build muscle. Under this second method you can eat as many fats and proteins as you want. This is the classic Atkin’s diet and requires no limit on calorie intake.
Don’t plan 6 months in advance. Give yourself one month. Just stick to a routine for a month and see what happens.

I am a hippo
As we all know i've also been a slacker at the gym for most of the summer. Surprisingly i did get in there on Monday and Wednesday so i am trying to get back into it. I think this is my "rock bottom" as they call it. I'm completely disgusted with myself. I'm spending the weekend grocery shopping and making meals for the week to prevent any more take out fiascos.

Dare I Even Say It?
This is the thing...during that time period I have had so much happening (some things you guys know about from my blog, some things you don't) and I've been stressed to my max. What do I do when I'm stressed? I eat. Specifically anything that's bad for me. Therefore...I have gained back 7 lbs. I'm so upset and ashamed with myself. But I'm not going to let this beat me. I've done a lot of thinking and I've decided to go at this full force. My birthday is only about 3 weeks away (July 17th) and I still intend to try to look my best. So don't lose faith in me...

yum yum
1 Rubbermaid plastic container large with lid (lid is important as you will find out soon)
Grilled chicken cut in pieces (you can get these readymade at the deli meats section)
Baby spinach
Caesar greens
Dried cranberries
Walnuts
Olive oil
White wine vinegar
Put desired quantities in the plastic container, put the lid on, and shake it like a Polaroid picture. It is imperative that you close the lid. Eat and feel good. Prep time 5 minutes.
I intend to try out variations of this, maybe include broccoli and other veggies, almonds, other berries. I don’t think though that making a decent salad at home necessarily costs less than getting one from outside.
P.S. close the lid before shaking.

Working out at work
I am not bullish on taking a shower at work; people I work with walking around naked.
I have to make up for time I spend in the gym.
I have to carry a huge bag with change of clothes, towels, toiletries.
Having to stuff wet clothes and towels in a bag after working out.
Anyway, I have decided I will not make excuses and learn to cope with working out at work. I ran 30 minutes today and because there were people there that I know, I kept going for a bit longer than I could. After I showered and changed, I looked myself in the mirror and I looked hot. My hair was all messy and wet because I had forgotten to bring a comb with me. I really felt good and motivated. I can still do this.

Boooooo!!!
On a positive note, i bought a big tub of spring mix for salads so it's pretty much done for me. I just have to add the extras like green onions or cucumbers or whatever i want on my salad. As well, i've handed in my parking key at work. They were going to start charging an obscene amount because "costs have gone up" so i decided i could use the exercise and instead of parking at my building i will be parking a few blocks away for free.
This week i've stayed the same.

You want a piece of this.....
I need to get back on track and focus on my meal planning and the gym. I was talking to Jennifer the other day about feeling lightheaded which never happens to me. I wonder if it is my diet as of late. I've not had much fruit or any of my regular protein shakes which i'm normally quite vigilant about. I figure i have a few weeks left till the wedding, i shall go out with a bang. My nutition plan will be easy to follow for a 2 week span. Clearly me trying every so often for months at a time does not work but 2 weeks is certainly an attainable goal.

The Old College Try
Due to my frustration, I of course threw my diet to the wind and have proceeded to eat whatever I like and fortunatley for me I haven't gained a pound...thank god. However, the puffiness did turn out to be some sort of freakishly long water retention (I was running to the bathroom literally every 20 minutes for an entire day.) My face has thinned back out and someone I hadn't seen in a long time complimented me on weight loss. So I think that was the motivation I needed and will be resuming the program as of Monday.

Mediocracy at it's best
I guess i realize the wedding is coming in less than a month and what could i possibly do in that little time to change anything? I have not given up, but i've not seen any changes in the past little while, rightfully so as i've been quite lax in my attempts to be healthy. I went for my dress fitting yesterday and i do fit into the dress so that is a bonus. Now whether i will feel comfortable is said dress is a completely different story. No way!!! When i weighed 40 pounds less i did not feel comfortable in tank tops and sleeveless shirts, nothing has changed in that respect and this is one of those skirts with a separate top that is like a tube top. I just may look like a stuffed sausage roll....

Ash lost her thong in Vegas...

Not only did I eat steak dinners left and right, we had buffet dinners, we had Carl's Jr. for breakfast... And if you think the eating was bad, the drinking was worse.
Luckily, despite eating gluttonously, I had the shits so badly from all the booze and grease, I didn't gain an ounce. Ash on the other hand....

Result Time
Results for this week are 1.15%.
My only problem is that Cinco de Mayo is friday and I promised my friends that I'd actually drink because in all the weekends we've gone out, I haven't touched a drop of alcohol in over a month. I guess the key will be practicing moderation and then busting my ass in workouts over the rest of the weekend.

My healthy weekend
I was able to study this weekend for extended hours and yet I worked out and ate very well.
For two days I have had an Asian Salad for lunch - all kinds of veggies with oranges with low fat dressing. It was yummy and it was healthy.
At dinner I have had baked chicken. No bread, no french fries, no chips. Just plain chicken.
For snack I have had plain almonds. For dessert I eat cold oranges.
I also went to gym for one hour each on both Sat and Sun. On Sat, I did 15 minutes each on treadmill, cycle, elliptical and stairmaster. On Sunday I lifted weight for an hour.
I had no beer all weekend. I am feeling pretty darn good about the weekend.
Still In Shock
That being said, today I was watching these young girls run laps around me at the track and I thought...hmmm, just out of curiosity, I wonder how far I could get without having to fall down and die. So I waited until I was alone on the field and away from watchful eyes and I started jogging. I passed my old exhaust line of 30 feet and miraculously I kept going. I swear to you...I was so surprised that I didn't know what to do with myself. I, Linny, hater of running and painfully out of shape woman...actually ran ENTIRE lap (1/4 of a mile) without stopping. I realize that may not seem much to some people but for me...this was huge. I wanted to walk a bit and try it again but a group of guys from the track team showed up to practice and I felt too self conscious so I finished my walking and left. But I can tell you for sure...next weekend i will be getting up bright and early and trying that again.

Frrrrrrozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity in New York

This chocolate was amazing, worth the hour and a half wait.

And I ate the whole thing. No booze till you finish your dessert!
I don't have a picture of it, but I ate the best roast corn of my life in a cuban place in Soho.
Needless to say, it's going to be an uphill battle for me to win this week, but I'm still trying.

Kick His Ass/And a Reminder
He came by and made a comment that I looked like I'd lost some weight. I of course smiled gratefully and said that I had...and then in one fell swoop...he ruined it all. He said, "Yeah, you're not the same chunky little lady I met last year."
What the fuck?! Chunky little lady my ass you piece of crap!
I was so pissed but I gritted my teeth and bit back all the curse words I wanted to hurl at him. Asshole.
By the way...Princess Pessimism asked me to post this link to use as a reminder to keep us on the straight and narrow....

Whatda Know
Last night alone was worth all the crappy dieting and exercising. I went out with a group of my friends for the first time since I lost the weight and I have to admit that I looked good and I felt good. I got hit on soooooooo much it was crazy. Granted they were all like 23 and 24 years old but it really fed my ego and made me feel better. They kept telling me I was hot and they hung around our table all night. I went home alone (by choice) but I felt less alone than I had in a long time.

U.S. kids getting too bulky for car seats
Last Updated Mon, 03 Apr 2006 11:38:27 EDT
CBC News
Thousands of obese American toddlers are too fat to be properly protected by their car-safety seats in a crash, a new study suggests.
The research concludes that at least 283,000 U.S. children aged one to six are too heavy for standards seats, including booster seats commonly used for children aged four and up.
The study appears in the April issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. It does not deal with obesity rates in Canada or elsewhere.
It says the problem is most noticeable among youngsters who exceed the weight limit for seats with built-in harnesses rated at up to 40 pounds (18 kilograms).
An estimated 182,000 three-year-old children in the U.S. fall into that category.
The danger is that the momentum of a crash could overpower the harness, allowing the child to spring free from the seat's restraining belt.
Lead author Lara Trifiletti said researchers at a Baltimore safety centre got interested in the topic because they saw children "who were very obese and our car-seat technicians were having a hard time finding car seats to fit them," the Associated Press reported.
Responding to the demand for larger seats, manufacturers are now producing super-sized versions priced at $240 US and up, news services reported.

Lessons
Anyways...I still had a lot of energy and I actually had the urge to go work it out...which is a first. So I suited up and hit the track. When I got there, there was a fragile, little old man walking slow laps and shortly after I started walking...an couple that looked to be in their late 70's started walking around the track as well.
I did my normal couple of miles and then tackled the stadium stairs but as I was getting tired and ready to go home...I looked at these old folks and they were still going. One of the older men was even following my lead and tackling the steps... walking slowly as opposed to my running but working hard nonetheless. They inspired me so much so that I did a few more laps before calling it quits and I will have you know...as I passed through the gates...they were still walking.

Sleep may be the key to weightloss....
SCOTT DEVEAU
Globe and Mail Update
Hitting the hay may be just as good as hitting the gym in the fight against childhood obesity, a new study suggests.
The risk of becoming overweight is 3.5 times higher in children who get less sleep than in those who sleep a lot, according to the research.
“It's ironic that part of the solution to obesity might lie in sleep, the most sedentary of all human activities,” according to Angelo Tremblay, one of three co-authors of the study, which is published in the March issue of the International Journal of Obesity,
Researchers from the Université Laval's Faculty of Medicine measured the weight, height, and waist size of 422 children aged 5 to 10. After taking body mass index readings, they found that those children who slept less than 10 hours a night were 3.5 times more at risk of being overweight than those who slept for more than 12 hours.
“No other factor analyzed in the study — parental obesity, parents' level of education, family income, time spent in front of the TV or computer, regular physical activity — had as much of an impact on obesity than time spent sleeping,” according to the report.
The researchers speculate that hormones produced during sleep, or those produced when the children are deprived of it, are responsible for the differences in weight, Mr. Tremblay said.
“Lack of sleep lowers the level of leptin, a hormone that stimulates metabolism and decreases hunger. In addition, short nights of sleep boost the concentration of ghrelin, a hormone that increases hunger,” Mr. Tremblay said in a statement.
Mr. Tremblay speculates that the relationship between a general loss of sleep and increased rates of obesity in society have broader implications than in just young children.
Between 1960 and 2000, the prevalence of obesity doubled in the population while the average night of sleep lost one to two hours. During the same period, the percentage of young adults who slept less than seven hours went from 16 per cent to 37 per cent, according to the report.
“In light of this study's results, my best prescription against obesity in children would be to encourage them to move more and to make sure they get enough sleep,” Mr. Tremblay said.
On the Way....

Working Out is Scary Stuff
Well, today I was doing laps when this black guy appears in the stands above me. I wouldn't have thought anything of it except he was carrying a small metal pole and a white grocery bag and he just stood there and watched me while I did laps...made me really nervous. Who wants some weird looking guy staring at them as he clutches a metal pole? He didn't move so I did my stadium steps (using the visitors side b/c it was far from him and close to my car) while keeping a close eye on him. He started walking down to the track to I tried to casually/quickly act like I was done and walk to my car. As I was pulling out, I noticed him put his stuff down, pull off his jacket and start stretching on the track so I guess he was just there to work out. But why sit and stare and me...and why walk around with a metal pole?
Since I don't have anyone to go with me I guess I'll just start varying my work out times and places...just to be safe. I can also start walking around my complex.

It's Working
However, due to my new plan, I have lost those 3 lbs (since Monday I might add) and am back to normal weight where I can only go down. Yay! I haven't been able to exercise much but I'm being really cautious about the food I eat instead. It all seems to be working great so you girls better step it up into high gear for next week...I'm going full steam ahead.

Fatties pay more
A German hotel has started calculating fees according to the weight of the guest.
The three-star Ostfriesland hotel in the north German town of Norden charges the equivalent of 34p per kilogram.
So a thin man weighing 60 kilos pays just over £20 a night, but a man weighing 100 kilos would be forced to shell out nearly £35.
Owner Juergen Heckroth said: "Slim guests live longer and can therefore come more often and that is why we reward them."
World's biggest burger

A US restaurant has beaten its record for the world's biggest burger with a whopping 15-pounder.
Denny's Beer Barrel Pub, in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, already had the title with a 6lb burger.
But owners thought a 15-pound burger would prove an even bigger attraction, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Diners who can finish the £25 burger in under five hours win £200, a T-shirt and have their name posted on the pub's wall of fame.
They also get the burger for free.
"Every restaurant needs a gimmick - ours is big burgers," said Dennis Liegey III, son of the restaurant's owner.
Visitors come from as far away as Australia and California just to see the 6-pounders and try to eat them.
The new burger, dubbed the Beer Barrel Belly Buster, is as big around as the inside of a car tyre.
It comes with a cup and half each of mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup, a head of lettuce, two onions, three tomatoes and 25 slices of cheese.

Atkins dangers
Last Updated Fri, 17 Mar 2006 16:57:46 EST
CBC News
A 40-year-old woman on the Atkins diet developed a dangerous buildup of acids in her blood, doctors said Friday.
INDEPTH: Diets
Atkins diet favours proteins.
The diet limits the intake of carbohydrates such as bread and pasta and encourages eating protein, including meat and cheese.
In 2004, the obese woman developed a life-threatening complication called ketoacidosis, Dr. Klaus-Dieter Lessnau, a professor at New York University School of Medicine, and his colleagues report in the March 18 issue of the medical journal The Lancet.
Ketoacidosis, caused by excessively high levels of ketones in the blood, can lead to death if untreated. Ketones are produced by the liver from fatty acids, which result from the breakdown of body fat in response to the absence of sugar in low-carb diets.
The woman was following the Atkins diet and took supplements sold by the company. She spent four days in intensive care, the team reported.
"Our patient had an underlying ketosis caused by the Atkins diet and developed severe ketoacidosis," the authors write in their report, titled, "Life-threatening complication of Atkins diet."
Mild pancreatitis or a stomach infection may have contributed to the problem, they added.
In a letter responding to the report, Lyn Steffen and Jennifer Nettleton of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health in Minneapolis concluded: "Low-carbohydrate diets for weight management are far from healthy."
Side-effects can include constipation, diarrhea, headache, bad breath and ketosis. Long-term effects of the diet are unknown, the pair said.
Steffen and Nettleton recommended that doctors keep an eye on people following the diet who may have a wide range of risk factors for disease.
The case is rare and does not represent a health threat linked to low-carb diets, other experts said.
Dr. Robert Atkins developed the low-carb diet based on his research. He died in 2003.

OK fatties!
I'm really excited for next week, I did some physio stretches on the pool deck last night and then I went swimming again, then I did my physio stretches in the sauna. I put on some pants this morning that used to be tight and now they fit me perfectly and look good. These were the kind of pants that I'd always wear with a longer baggier shirt over them so that the all the bulging that they caused and the cutting into my belly wouldn't be apparent, and now I could wear them tucked in, if I was a tucked in shirt kind of a person.
I feel like a jerk in my swim suit, but I'm getting over it. When I dig up my more flattering suit, then I'll be more confident about the whole thing. Maybe, just maybe I might splurge and buy a new one.

Me on this day
The Big Plan
So I'm going to get down and dirty w/ my dieting and exercising but since St. Patrick's Day is tomorrow night and there is a big throw down at the Celtic Tavern (they're having a block party and there will be lots of green beer with my name on it), I didn't want to have to miss the party, nor did I want to diet this week and ruin it in one night. So I will be starting fresh as of Sunday. I've got my game face on...watch out!
Rock On
I spent Monday evening cooking all of my lunches for the week, as well i have been eating a healthy dinner (except once i had zucchini sticks, baked, but battered) and have been going to classes at the gym. I've decided that i'm going to try really hard to stay in this weekend. Perhaps i will rent a movie, spring clean or read a good book.

Also, despite the fact that my weight has stayed the same. I'm still shrinking. I wore a pair of pants yesterday that had fit perfectly a few weeks ago and I had to hitch them up all day yesterday. So I really have nothing to complain about.
I'm interested to see how Yrautca's Big Mac and Almond Crusted Brie binge is going to effect his totals this week, if Ash's birthday week has continued to catch up with her....

News from the half-ton man
Last Updated Wed, 08 Mar 2006 17:36:33 EST
CBC News
A Nebraska man who once weighed 1072 pounds has dropped another 81 pounds in surgery that removed a chunk of fat, skin and fluids hanging from his waist.
Patrick Deuel, 43, weighed in at 400 pounds after the operation on Tuesday at a hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Doctors performed the surgery because the extra flesh made it hard for Deuel to walk.
Deuel weighed 1,072 pounds and was dying of heart failure when he checked into the hospital in Sioux Falls in June 2004.
He dropped 457 pounds in seven months, crediting most of the loss to exercise and diet, although he also had gastric bypass surgery in 2004.
Before he entered the facility, he hadn't left his home in seven years and was so big that workers had to cut a hole in his bedroom wall to get him out.
A special ambulance with extra-wide doors and a ramp-and-winch system was used to get him to hospital.
Deuel has said he plans to make public appearances to tell his story once he is more mobile.
Deuel's surgeon says the most recent operation means he could lose even more weight through walking and exercise.

Early weigh-in
No beer, regular workout, dinner consists of oranges and carrots. It has been tough but I was motivated. We have a client dinner on Thursday night and I know I will have to eat a proper meal. Then breakfast with colleague the next day will also be proper, and when I travel I have to eat at airports so that cant be too healthy either.

Hoopla
Perhaps i'll follow Berly and write a food diary so i can really see just what it is i've been ingesting. As well, i believe in the power of the mind and writing goals down....sounds like hoopla i know but it works for me. Years ago i set out 3 very specific goals with a timeframe and all that. I was able to accomplish all three, the first was to travel to Europe, the 2nd to get a car and the 3rd to go back to school. I'll have to set out a very specific one for weightloss now cause i'm running out of time.

Jennifer's Request
Jennifer suggested I might need to post my workout/food intake data so that you may tear it apart, offer advice, criticize (in a good way hopefully), etc. so that my fatty bo batty ass can get smaller.
Here it is.
Breakfast: One piece of wheat toast, slice of cheese, two slices of bacon (4pts)
Snack: 3 yogurts (they say it helps you burn tummy fat) (6pts)
Lunch: Usually a salad, lots of greens, crackers (8pts)
Dinner: Sandwich or chicken and rice with green beans, sometimes a ceaser salad from Blue Baker, sometimes soup, it varies a lot, but usually I say around ten (10) points
Workout: Bodypump-1hr M and W, Bodyflow-1hr plus thirty minutes on treadmill T and Th

I feel good now
Then lets assume I were a member of this blog too. I’d mention it to my girlfriend. I’d say why don’t you join, love. She would not show much interest. But in my haste and hope and because I wanted it oh so bad, I’d start writing on the blog that my fat girlfriend was now in competition.
This is where Jennifer and her band player boyfriend enter the picture.
Yes yes it was a long setup to a cheap blow. But I wanted to do it for a long long time.
Pissed off
I have been doing pretty good on my diet.
I have been working out.
I drink lots of water to flush my system.
No change.
I think my body likes to be fat.
How do I change its mind?

We're toast
I also did some shopping, I opted for healthy food requiring less prep time. I've found that I keep buying fresh stuff and having it ready, but then not being home for dinner. So this week my strategy is that I'm going for more frozen/canned stuff. And if I need something fresh I can just nip down to the overpriced market around the corner for it instead of having it on-hand and then ending up going to Subway or somewhere instead.
He just let me try the carrot soup. That fucker can cook.

I am the Champion!
Not only did I kick all your fat asses this week with my modest performance, but I'm comfortably wearing a pair of pants today that didn't even fit me when I bought them on sale last year, when I was 10 lbs heavier. They are a lovley brown with red and beige pinstrips. One of the two pairs of winter weight pants I own, and both the same size, so I can finally stop freezing my ass off (literally) on the way to and from work.
This just goes to show that slow and steady wins the race my tubby friends.
I'm having another appointment today, seeing a doctor who does a lot of sports medicine to determine whether I'll be needing an MRI (thank the lord for socialized medicine - if you disagree with me you can take it up on my blog, this is no place for politics). So hopefully the end is in sight for my knee pains and I can get back to blasting my quads and have a little more to eat.
At the moment I'm out of sorts, hungry, I have the start of a headache, I'm tired and grumpy and while I've already been at work for an hour, I still have 12 hours to go before the end of the work day, with an excrutiating knee exam in the middle.
