The Old College Try

So, I have totally veered from my diet and exercise program the last week or more because I got totally frustrated. I went forever without losing a single pound, which wouldn't have been as miserable except that my face suddenly blew up. At first I thought that maybe I just had some water retention which usually only lasts for a couple of days...this lasted for nearly 2 weeks.

Due to my frustration, I of course threw my diet to the wind and have proceeded to eat whatever I like and fortunatley for me I haven't gained a pound...thank god. However, the puffiness did turn out to be some sort of freakishly long water retention (I was running to the bathroom literally every 20 minutes for an entire day.) My face has thinned back out and someone I hadn't seen in a long time complimented me on weight loss. So I think that was the motivation I needed and will be resuming the program as of Monday.

I don't know if I really understand the point of eating more because you are not losing weight. Not losing and not gaining are a good thing, it means that you've reached an equilibrium, and if you keep it up then you'll stay that weight, or if you want to lose more, you just need to do a little more.
I suspect people who get frustrated when they aren't losing and go off their diets are the same people who think that when they are finished dieting they can just go back to eating the way they ate before.
If you resolve that you are going to be a healthy eater whether it results in weightloss or not, then you'll be able to stick with it through the plateaus and not get so discouraged.
Complements from people who haven't seen you in a while are gold when you are trying to lose weight. I had dinner with my aunt last night, and she kept mentioning it. It helps to bring the whole thing into a more long term perspective, you start to remember where you were when you started. Another thing I like to do, when I'm unlikely to run into anyone I haven't seen in a while, is to try on old clothes and marvel at how big they are, then I try on some clothes that are still too tight, but not nearly as tight as they used to be. It puts me right back on track.
